Hillel International staff joined more than 3,500 Jewish teens from over 60 countries at the annual BBYO International Convention in Philadelphia. Over the course of four days, Hillel staff connected with students and introduced them to resources like Hillel International’s Virtual College Prep Series, scholarships for incoming students, and the College Decision Hub to help them prepare for college. Federal Government Sues UCLA Alleging University Let Antisemitism Fester
The U.S. Department of Justice filed a civil rights lawsuit against the University of California, accusing UCLA of creating a “hostile work environment” by failing to address antisemitic harassment against Jewish and Israeli faculty and staff after October 2023. In response, a UCLA spokesperson said the university has “taken concrete and significant steps” to combat antisemitism on its campus.
Black-Jewish Unity Dinners Build Bridges in Baltimore
Hillel International’s Black-Jewish Unity Dinners series, in partnership with Blue Square Alliance Against Hate and UNCF, recently returned to Baltimore, bringing together Black, Jewish, and Black and Jewish students from local colleges and universities. The evening focused on conversation over a shared meal, encouraging students to learn about the history of Black-Jewish relationships, build new connections, and confront antisemitism and racism. Organizers hope the event will spark stronger relationships and continued collaboration between the two communities.
UMD Student Testifies About Campus Antisemitism at Federal Hearing
University of Maryland student Gabi Stern testified before the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights about antisemitism on college campuses, sharing concerns that Jewish students do not always feel represented or protected. Stern’s testimony highlighted the timing of a BDS resolution that passed at the university on Yom Kippur, making it difficult for the Jewish community to participate in the voting process. “It just feels like that was kind of a deliberate attempt to exclude us from the representative process,” he said.
