This fall, more than 130 Hillels will receive grants to expand Shabbat programming as part of Hillel International’s “Shabbat Surge,” a movement-wide effort to strengthen Shabbat experiences during the first six weeks of the semester. The initiative aims to bring more students together around the Shabbat table and create opportunities for connection and community. “There’s something really special about seeing students who might not otherwise cross paths sitting around the same table, laughing, talking, and creating community together,” said Ben Novorr, director of Jewish student engagement at University of Kansas Hillel.

The student club lost access to campus spaces and university funding, while Yale continues investigating reports of antisemitism connected to the protest.

As National College Decision Day approaches on May 1, Hillel International President and CEO Adam Lehman encourages Jewish high school students and their families to assess campus climates carefully and holistically. ADL Report: U.S. Antisemitic Incidents Hit Record High for Fourth Year In a Row
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) recorded 9,354 reported antisemitic incidents in 2024 — the highest since tracking began in 1979 and a 5% rise from 2023. The report marks the fourth consecutive year of record incident numbers, with New York and California reporting the most incidents. ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt linked the spike to the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas attack, warning that Jewish Americans are being targeted daily for their identity.
Hillel Student Honors Holocaust Victims with “Stumbling Stones” in Berlin
Leah Davenport, a senior and Hillel participant at the College of Charleston, led the installation of Stolpersteine — small brass cobblestones placed outside former homes of Holocaust victims — in Berlin to honor the Landsmann family, who were killed in the Holocaust. Inspired by letters she found in her research, Davenport raised funds and worked with artist Gunter Demnig to commemorate the family’s memory in March 2025.
Harvard Sues U.S. Government In Response to $9 Billion Federal Funding Freeze
Harvard University filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government after it froze $2.2 billion of the university’s federal funding and placed an additional $9 billion under review. The administration cited Harvard’s handling of campus antisemitism as the reason for the funding freeze. Harvard is arguing that the funding freeze violates the First Amendment.
