This fall, more than 130 Hillels will receive grants to expand Shabbat programming as part of Hillel International’s “Shabbat Surge,” a movement-wide effort to strengthen Shabbat experiences during the first six weeks of the semester. The initiative aims to bring more students together around the Shabbat table and create opportunities for connection and community. “There’s something really special about seeing students who might not otherwise cross paths sitting around the same table, laughing, talking, and creating community together,” said Ben Novorr, director of Jewish student engagement at University of Kansas Hillel.

More than 50 students from Baltimore-area colleges and universities gathered for discussions and activities focused on building understanding and collaboration between Black and Jewish student communities.
Rider Hillel Student President Leads Revival of Jewish Life on Campus
Senior Ethan Elkin-Handelman, president of Rider University Hillel and member of the Hillel Israel Leadership Network, has revitalized the Hillel at Rider University, tripling the number of participating students sand earning it the campus award of Organization of the Year. An elementary education major who is passionate about special education, Elkin-Handelman draws inspiration from early experiences working with children with disabilities in order to support every student he encounters.
Arizona State University Hosts ADL Conference on Campus Antisemitism
Arizona State University (ASU) hosted the ADL Desert 2025 Conference on Antisemitism and Hate, attended by over 450 people, including ASU students and faculty. During the conference, student leaders and ASU Hillel Executive Director Debbie Yunker Kail shared their personal experiences with antisemitism on campus. “Hearing directly from students about how it’s impacting them is really critical for people’s understanding,” said Yunker Kail.
University of Florida Hillel Hosts Passover Seder, Honors Israeli Hostages Still Held in Gaza
Over 330 students and community members attended the University of Florida Hillel’s Passover Seder. A memorial at the entrance honored the 59 Israeli hostages held in Gaza, with a sign reading “Don’t Passover Them.” UF Hillel Executive Director Rabbi Jonah Zinn emphasized the connection between the ancient Exodus and the story Passover, and the contemporary struggle for freedom faced by the hostages.

The U.S. government froze over $1 billion in federal funding to Cornell and nearly $790 million to Northwestern as part of ongoing antisemitism and civil rights investigations. The freeze halted dozens of research projects, with Cornell citing impacts on national defense and health, while Northwestern emphasized the funding supports critical medical breakthroughs.
