This fall, more than 130 Hillels will receive grants to expand Shabbat programming as part of Hillel International’s “Shabbat Surge,” a movement-wide effort to strengthen Shabbat experiences during the first six weeks of the semester. The initiative aims to bring more students together around the Shabbat table and create opportunities for connection and community. “There’s something really special about seeing students who might not otherwise cross paths sitting around the same table, laughing, talking, and creating community together,” said Ben Novorr, director of Jewish student engagement at University of Kansas Hillel.

Harvard University settled Title VI lawsuits this week which alleged that Harvard failed to protect its Jewish students amid a rise of antisemitism on campus following the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel. With the settlement, Harvard agreed to take steps towards countering antisemitism on its campus, including integrating the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) definition of antisemitism into university’s policies, establishing an official partnership with Israeli universities, and providing additional resources for the study of antisemitism.
Anti-Israel Protesters Disrupt Israeli Professor’s Class at Columbia University
The start of the semester at Columbia University was marked by anti-Israel protests outside the university’s gates and library, and protesters disrupting a class on the history of modern Israel. The class, taught by Israeli professor Avi Shilon, was interrupted as demonstrators threw fliers that wrote “Crush Zionism” at the students, argued with the professor, and refused to leave.
Bipartisan Bill Addressing Antisemitism On Campus Reintroduced in Senate
A bipartisan bill, the Protecting Students on Campus Act, has been reintroduced in the Senate, aiming to strengthen protections for students facing discrimination. The bill would make it easier for students to report civil rights complaints and hold universities accountable. The reintroduction follows the release of data from Hillel International, which reported a nearly 700% increase in antisemitic incidents on U.S. campuses between 2023 and 2024.
Four Wounded in Tel Aviv Terrorist Attack
Four people were stabbed during a terrorist attack on Tuesday evening in Tel Aviv. Police confirmed that the attacker, a Moroccan citizen who entered Israel on a tourist visa, had been killed. The wounded individuals have been provided with medical treatment. This is the second attack of its kind in Tel Aviv this week.
Three Hostages Arrive Safely in Israel After Release from Hamas Captivity
After 471 days in Hamas captivity, three hostages who were kidnapped on October 7, 2023 have been released, and have crossed safely into Israel, escorted by the IDF. Emily Damari (28), Romi Gonen (24), and Doron Steinbrecher (31) have been reunited with their families.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported that Wikipedia has officially banned several editors who used the free, community-edited platform to spread antisemitic rhetoric and misinformation about Zionism, Israel, and the Israel-Hamas war.
