Hillel International Expands Shabbat Opportunities at 130+ Hillels
This fall, more than 130 Hillels will receive grants to expand Shabbat programming as part of Hillel International’s “Shabbat Surge,” a movement-wide effort to strengthen Shabbat experiences during the first six weeks of the semester. The initiative aims to bring more students together around the Shabbat table and create opportunities for connection and community. “There’s something really special about seeing students who might not otherwise cross paths sitting around the same table, laughing, talking, and creating community together,” said Ben Novorr, director of Jewish student engagement at University of Kansas Hillel.

The Binghamton University Student Association Congress issued a statement condemning a recent proposal to divest from Israel. The student government emphasized that it was established to represent all student voices, including Jewish student voices, and expressed that the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement leads to the marginalization of Jewish students.
Hamas Confirms Four Female Hostages Will Be Released Saturday
Hamas confirmed that four female hostages will be released on Saturday as part of the ongoing hostage release and ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas. Amongst the four are Liri Albag (19), Daniella Gilboa (20), Karina Ariev (20), and Naama Levy (20). Following this release, three additional hostages are scheduled to be freed each Saturday for the next four weeks.

Hillels around the world commemorated International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a variety of programs and events. Hillel Guelph in Ontario, Canada focused on a week of educational programming, including museum visits, survivor testimonies, and a candle-lighting ceremony with an exhibit inspired by Yad VaShem.

George Mason University (GMU) has officially opened “The Mason Mensch”, the only kosher restaurant in Northern Virginia. A partnership between George Mason Hillel and Chabad at GMU, the restaurant’s opening marks a significant step towards making kosher food available to students and the wider Northern Virginia Jewish community.
